School Uniform
School uniform is compulsory for
all children who are enrolled in Prep-Yr 7 at St John's. Uniforms
are available for purchase at the uniform shop in the school office building.
Communication
A
newsletter is sent home every week to keep parents informed of school
activities. Parents or groups wishing to place items in the newsletter should
hand them in to the office by Tuesday morning for publication that week.
Parents are encouraged
to contact teachers regularly. We ask however that parents arrange a time
suitable to teachers which doesn’t interfere with scheduled class times.
Prep
In 2008 St Johns has two
prep classes operating as per the primary school timetable.
Most Prep days
include: devotion, indoor play, outdoor play, small and large group
activities, music and movement, language and rest time.
Pastoral Care
At St John's we
recognize the need to support parents in the upbringing of the “whole”
child, including the physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual
care.
Children are involved in
daily classroom devotions, saying grace before meals and prayer times.
Teachers use the Christian Studies Curriculum Framework as a basis for Christian Studies to
assist the children in their individual faith journey.
Our school focuses on a bullying intervention programme and a relational
management programme.
Families
are welcome to attend our weekly whole school devotions and the Sunday
services at the Lutheran church. Organised
informal activities for families are provided throughout the year.
Our active P&F meet regularly and help provide activities for
families.
Opportunities are available to assist families in times of need.
Transport
This is to be
arranged by parents. Information regarding available bus transport is available
from the office.
Starting Age
It is preferred that
children enrolled in:
Prep:
be 4 ½ years of age at the commencement of Prep, turning 5 before June
30th of that year
Grade 1:
be turning 6 years of age in the earlier part of the year
Sporting Activities
|
The school is divided
into three house teams; Wivenhoe, Somerset and Boondooma, to take part
in weekly and annual sports events. All students are involved in
athletics, house team sports and 'Swim and Survive' swimming programs,
in addition to their normal classroom HPE lessons. There are
opportunities for students to be chosen as school representatives to compete at local carnivals and Zone
or State championships.

|
Wivenhoe – Orange Boondooma - Green
Somerset – Purple
The children enjoy
annual swimming and athletics carnivals.
Year 4 to 7 students participate in winter and summer carnivals with other schools in the district.
The sports played at these carnivals may include Soccer, Cricket, Netball, Newcombe, T-Ball, Basketball,
Tennis and Touch Football.
Computer Use
All classes have access to pods of laptops, which are borrowed through the
library by the teachers for sessions through the week. These are used in the
classroom setting for internet research, student projects and work samples,
teacher-supervised internet educational games, and school intranet learning
objects. Each class also participates in a weekly specialist computer skills
lesson, in conjunction with their library lesson. These lessons are held
in the Library/Computer Lab.
Camps
Students in Years 3 to 7 participate in an
annual camp at various locations.
These include:
Year 3 – Duckadang
Year 4 & 5 - Hervey Bay/Googa
Year 6 & 7 –
Canberra/Sunshine Coast
Students in Year 2
may participate in a day camp.
Banking
The school provides opportunities for the children to operate a savings account. This is with
the Lutheran Laypeople’s League and banking is conducted every Wednesday
morning of school term. While it is a matter of personal choice how you organise
your finances, we would urge you to consider the L.L.L savings account for the
following reason:
Our school is able to borrow
the large sums of money needed to finance our building programme
at a very favourable rate from the L.L.L. However, we must maintain “matching
deposits” earmarked for St. John’s Lutheran Primary School. That is, there
must be a dollar of saving deposit earmarked for St John’s in the
L.L.L for every dollar we borrow.
Tuckshop
Tuckshop is provided three times a week through the
P & F on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. Further information is available through the
school's weekly newsletter. Tuckshop forms can be downloaded by following this
